The Unmentionables? Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids: Unmentionable!

yes, hemorrhoids are also varicose veins that are swollen and bulging in the rectum. They can cause itching, pain, and bleeding. Up to 50 percent of pregnant women get hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids are common during pregnancy for many reasons. During pregnancy blood volume increases greatly, which can cause veins to enlarge. The expanding uterus also puts pressure on the veins in the rectum.

They can occur anytime during the pregnancy and the common symptoms of diarrhea and constipation can worsen hemorrhoids. They can also be aggravated by standing or sitting for long periods of time. Hemorrhoids usually improve after pregnancy.

Some tips to help prevent hemorrhoids are:

  • Drink lots of fluids.

  • Eat fiber-rich foods, like whole grains, raw or cooked leafy green vegetables, and fruits.

  • Try not to strain with bowel movements.

There are a couple of products that can be used to help relieve the symptoms of hemorrhoids if they occur which are safe to use during pregnancy:

  • Over the counter hemorrhoidal creams such as Preparation-H and Anusol. I recommend you find one that has lidocaine in them if you are having pain with the swelling and pressure. There are also prescription strength creams that your provider can give you also.

  • Witch Hazel pads such as Tucks Pads can be placed up against the hemorrhoids if they are on the outside to provide some relief for the itching or burning they may cause.

  • If constipation seems to be the reason the hemorrhoids have worsened, you can use a fiber supplement such as Metamucil, Fibercon or Citracel to relieve the constipation. A gentle laxative may also be used such as Correctol or Senakot.

  • If diarrhea is the cause of the hemorrhoids worsening, a fiber supplement as listed above, can help add bulk to the stool and make them more firm. Immodium may also be used after the first trimester as directed by your healthcare provider.

Unfortunately, hemorrhoids are one of the very common discomforts of pregnancy that women experience. Pushing with delivery will aggravate hemorrhoids for most women, but just know they do seem to get better after pregnancy.
